Within six months the newness of their surroundings wore off, and Mrs. Hansey showed her true self. One day Roseanna found Mr. Hansey cowering at the bottom of the birds' cage with a large gash down his chest. The birds were immediately separated and Mr. Hansey received medical attention. In time Mr. Hansey's chest healed and several attempts were made to get the pair back together. Each time Mr. Hansey was returned to the communal cage, Mrs. Hansey would turn into psycho hen and attack her mate. Eventually Mr. Hansey became a bachelor bird.
Alas, the feather plucking behavior was not limited to Mrs. Hansey. Whenever Mr. Hansey would begin to show signs of new feather growth, he would pluck himself naked again; he did not even leave his down alone. Roseanna had both Mr. and Mrs. Hansey checked out thoroughly by two avian vets. Blood was pulled, diet and environment were scrutinized, and nothing was found wrong with either bird or their habitat. Both vets diagnosed Mr. Hansey as a neurotic plucker and Mrs. Hansey as a hen given to psychotic episodes.
Now Mr. Hansey is a real talker, and while his momma Roseanna and her friend Christine would be talking to each other on the phone, he would be yelling out, "Come here!,", "Give me some water please", "What cha' doin'?", "Tickle, tickle, tickle", and "Hansey loves you". Inevitably the conversation would turn to the chattering bird. Roseanna eventually told her friend Christine about poor Mr. Hansey, his psycho hen companion, and their naked conditions. Unfortunately neither Christine nor Roseanna knew what else they could do to help the Hansey's.
It was May, 2005, and Christine needed a new cage for two wild-caught Amazon Parrot boys she was rescuing from an unhappy situation. Though they were in good feather, they, like many wild-caught birds, did suffer from extreme anxiety and dangerously flailed about their cage each time it was cleaned. Christine called Joe at www.Birdsafe.com to order a Kings Cage for her new birds. During the course of their conversation, Joe told her that Kings Cages had come out with a homeopathic remedy for pluckers called "Pluck No More." Christine laughed and said sarcastically, "OMG! Yeah, right. Pluck No More. Ha ha!" Joe said that he had heard many favorable comments about it and told her that it really worked. He said the only place to get the product online was from Kings Cages. Christine called Kings early the next morning and Andrew King answered the phone. While ordering the cage, they discussed "Pluck No More" and how plucking, untamed, and nervous parrots have benefited from this product. He told her that she should try it on her Amazon rescues because of the calming effect it has. Christine decided that it would be worth it to try the product and ordered some along with a new cage. The cage and the "Pluck No More" arrived the very next day. Into the new Kings stately mansion the boys, who had now become known as the "O'Boise's," went and, into their water went the "Pluck No More." A week passed and amazingly the boys were not so phobic of hands intruding upon their space. They remained alert but did not flail their wings in their attempts to flee when their cage got its daily wipe down. Christine immediately called and told Roseanna about the "Pluck No More" and the success that the O'Boise's had experienced.
Several days later Roseanna found a UPS package on her front porch addressed to Mr. Hansey Lauenstein. Roseanna opened the package and in it was a bottle of "Pluck No More" from "Auntie Christine!" Christine told Roseanna to give it to Mrs. Psycho Hen as well to calm her down. It worked on the O'Boise's and just might help adjust her attitude. During the next several weeks Roseanna used the bottle of "Pluck No More" and found that just from using that one bottle, both birds are fully feathered AND Mrs. Psycho Hen has had a marked reduction of her "psychotic" episodes. There also appears to be a residual effect of the homeopathic solution--Mrs. Hansey will now step up for Roseanna without trying to take a chunk out of her hand and is becoming more socialized as each day passes. The next step will be to try and get Mrs. Hansey to accept Mr. Hansey back into her cage. Roseanna is awaiting receipt of two additional bottles of "Pluck No More." Keep checking back to hear about more progress from Mr. and Mrs. Hansey.
